The Internet is Cluttered with Content

I can't tell you how many times in college my professors would have us all take out our phones, choose a social media platform, and scroll for 30 seconds, COUNTING the ads that we were served in that amount of time. I graduated 3 years ago. That was before Elon bought Twitter (X), before ChatGPT was released to the public, before Netflix started serving ads. Yet 3 years ago, anywhere from 6-15 ads would come across our screens in less than a minute, so what can that possibly mean for the number of ads a single person might consume in today's world, after scrolling for 30 minutes?

People are becoming increasingly harder to reach, even though we can contact each other within a matter of seconds because our phones are always by our sides. Getting your content, your ads, your brand to cut through the clutter and be remembered by any audience-let alone your target audience-seems intangible.

The Challenges of Online Marketing

As an account manager, it's my job to ensure that the marketing team is representing your brand as true to life as they can. From Meta ad copy to Instagram Reels, the message that is created by our team isn't about just creating content, it's about creating the right content. Content that not only brings your brand to life and humanizes it but also resonates with your customers and increases your credibility. Taking the tangible pieces of your brand that already exist and translating them into an online space.

Of course, creating a persona for a business that you don't spend 40 hours a week with is difficult! Our social media managers and our advertising managers are working on multiple industries per day. So they are well versed in embodying various values, traits, and mannerisms that fit the brands they represent. However, for small business owners who may have a difficult time representing their personal life online (trust me, Facebook is hard to keep up with), it can be even more challenging to represent the business online- in a way that intrigues people, capturing their attention and driving interest.

Strategy as the Key to Success

At Alpha Social Media, to tackle our goal of "cutting through the clutter", we develop a strategy that fits each business uniquely, and not just for paid ads! For restaurant marketing this strategy can be as simple as dividing up promotions into buckets of content. Strategically building content that fits into 3-5 categories like, featuring menu items, reminders of open hours, and happy hour specials, makes filling a calendar month of valuable social media content much easier. For others, you can start to find your strategy by looking into your core values and finding the pain points of your target audience.

The Honest Truth

Regardless of the industry, as long as your strategy is focused on staying authentic to your brand, your audience will be able to relate to you. Finding your own corner of the internet to create and communicate authentic ideas will always stick with viewers more than jumping on a new trend every 10 minutes, no matter how small that corner is.

The next time you find yourself about to hit that share/post/publish button, take a minute. Ask yourself, 'Is this something that would still hold value in a week? Does this represent my brand well? Am I posting to stay active or to be proactive?' Don't allow your brand to stand idly by in a college experiment. Build a strategy or get help finding your strategy. Cut through the clutter!
